Communion Offerings

It is a long-standing Methodist Communion practice to invite contributions in support of those less fortunate. In Dundee, contributions are now invited via a plate inside the upstairs door. These offerings are allocated each month, by Church Council decision, to different Methodist or other charities. There is no compulsion or pressure to support this Offering – it is matter of individual decision and choice.

Methodist Covenant Service today

It has been Methodist practice since the time of John Wesley to hold this annual Service in which we are invited to remember our calling as the people of God and to renew our commitment to God’s service. This Service also includes the celebration of Holy Communion in which all are invited to participate as they wish.

Around the Circuit and Beyond!

Dear Friends,

An exciting start to our new connexional year. We welcome Revd Nik Wooller half time to the circuit. I understand that people are trying to identify which Ni(c)k with comments such as ‘young Nik and…’ hmm, perhaps something like ‘slightly less young Nick’?!

Nik will have oversight in Blairgowrie and this is a time of learning and opportunity so please pray. Nik will share oversight with myself in Perth helping us to discover what it means to be church in our communities. I know you will make Nik welcome and strangers will soon become friends. The other half of Nik’s time will be spent working with the District, building relationships alongside churchless Christians. Please pray for Nik and her ministry.

We celebrate with the Perth congregation as they move back into worship in their refurbished premises and I encourage as many of you as possible to join in the fun on the open day on Saturday 16th September. You will see a transformed bright, welcoming and flexible space. A Service of rededication takes place on the morning of 17th September. Please pray for Perth at the threshold of this new beginning.

Dundee are exploring closer relationships with the United Reformed Church and will be sharing in worship once a fortnight. This will give both congregations time and space to reflect on the way forward. Please pray for developing friendship and fellowship in Dundee.

At Montrose the Methodist congregation now share worship on a weekly basis with the Knox United Free church who have made us very welcome. Every second and fourth week the Methodist Church takes responsibility for worship with the remaining weeks being the responsibility of the United Free Church. This is an exciting time for these congregations and I know your prayers will be welcome. I should also like to offer congratulations on behalf of the circuit to Simon Richardson (a member at Montrose). Simon has won bronze and silver medals for Table Tennis in the Special Olympics held recently in Sheffield.

In Arbroath please pray for St Johns as they seek to serve alongside others and work out the way ahead.

Having travelled to Bulgaria in the summer I was delighted to share in worship with the Methodists in Sevlievo and visit one of our preachers, Julya Walsh. I encourage you to continue to pray for that church and for Julya and I know they will pray for us.

On the way back from Bulgaria I was reminded of the power of prayer when we stopped off in Leipzig in the former East Germany. For a number of years in the 1970s/80s a small group of people met in the city centre church of St Nicholas. They met on Monday nights to pray for peace. Over the years this group grew. By 1989 the group had become very large and after an hour’s service the minister led 7000 people out on to the streets where they were joined by people from other churches. With strict instructions from the ministers not to be provoked into violence they walked around the ring road in Leipzig with people abandoning cars to join in. They walked past the headquarters of the Stasi (Secret Police). In all about 70000 people gathered that night in what became known as the peaceful revolution. News of this spread and two weeks later the Berlin Wall came down.

As we enter into this new Methodist year, with many challenges and questions, I encourage all of us to prepare by taking some time to pray.

With love

Nick

Request for Prayers on ‘Mission’

‘Following on from the excellent District Prayer Diary that Jill Baker produced for us last year, I am hoping that we can have a similarly inspiring one this year. I invite you to submit prayers, meditations, stories and other reflections, particularly around ‘mission’. This may be something that your church is involved with – at home or abroad – or it may be thoughts around the need for mission and our call to discipleship. I look forward to hearing back, either directly on smj4409@hotmail.co.uk or via Fiona at District Office, by the end of July. Many thanks. Sue Marshall-Jennings’

Local response to the Grenfell Tower Fire

The tragedy that took place at Grenfell Tower on 14 June has touched many hearts across the world.

The London District Chairs, the then President and Vice-President of the Conference and the Conference itself have all shared their grief and their prayers.

But it has been the work on the ground that should really be highlighted: the amazing support of local volunteers, Notting Hill Methodist Church and the Revd Mike Long.

At one of the prayer vigils Mike said: “There are times when all the words we can say are not adequate and sometimes words fail us because no words can do justice to how we feel, or what we have seen or what has happened.”

Three tonnes of food were donated and many more tonnes of clothes and toiletries, which have all been shared or are in the middle of being processed. Further donations of goods are not required, but money for those affected is still greatly appreciated.

As well as being a base for donations, holding prayer vigils and organising community action, the church has extended its opening hours for prayer, reflection and practical assistance from 9.00 in the morning until 7.00 at night Monday-Saturday – a true hub for the local community.

Many candles were lit and Mike later spoke of the importance of lighting candles as a sign not only of grieving but also of a faith that dares to hope.

For updates and information on how you can help, see the church website.

Eagles Wings seeking new premises

The Eagles Wings Group is going to have to move from its existing base in the next few months, and so they are seeking alternative premises. A brief summary of what they are looking for appears below.

If you are aware of any possibilities which might match their requirements, please contact Eagles Wings direct with any suggestions they might follow up.

“We currently operate from the old Elim church in Dudhope Crescent Road, but unfortunately have been told that we need to move out within the next 3 months. We have fairly specific needs – we need to be central, have a space big enough to hold approx 50 service users, a large kitchen, at least 2 offices and a parking space for our soup kitchen van.”
