Preaching Plan for June-August 2015

The plan for the coming quarter is now online. Please note the amendment of Blairgowrie preachers in June. It has been distributed by email and some printed copies are on the vestibule table. Please contact David Easson to receive a copy in either format.

“Hot Chocolate” Visit - Learning & Development Forum

The District Learning and Development Forum is to be in Dundee on Wednesday, for an arranged visit to the “Hot Chocolate” youth project run in the Steeple Church. They will be pleased for any Dundee folk to join them for this visit - please gather at Marketgait at 4.15pm (it may be helpful if you can let Sue Marshall-Jennings know in advance if you hope to go). The visit is from 4.30pm, for some 45 minutes, after which the Forum will return to Marketgait for its official meeting.

“Hot Chocolate” is “a place where the young people feel 'at home' and feel surrounded by 'family'. We work with young people ages 12-21 who hang out in the city centre (around 150 different young people over the course of a fortnight).”

For more information, see the Hot Chocolate website or contact the L&D Forum via Sally Robertson: robertsons@methodistchurch.org.uk ; tel: 01350 723275.

General Church Meeting - Sunday 21st June

The Minister and Church Stewards propose that we should start the GCM at 10.45am, with coffee served from 10.30am. This should enable us to finish before 1pm, when parking charges start. It was also thought that sitting at tables might be helpful - assistance with setting these out on the Saturday will be welcome! The format will include both worship, necessary business, and time for conversation on our life as a Methodist church community based on Marketgait.

Please note that required business includes the (re)appointments of Church Stewards (one vacancy at least still!), and reps to the Church Council (3 persons). To volunteer, nominate, or suggest people to approach, please contact a current Church Steward.

Ministers on the Move

Rev Mary Patterson has requested that there is no formal marking of the end of her ministry with and among us, but the GCM will give opportunity to express our best wishes before her move to the Ayrshire and Renfrewshire Circuit.

The Circuit Welcome Service for the Rev Nick Baker will be in Dundee on Wednesday 2nd September at 6pm.

Food Bank thanks

Dundee Foodbank has sent a certificate acknowledging donations made by and through Dundee Methodists during 2014: our gifts of 213.5 kg (over 30 stones) provided food for 27 individuals.

Dundee Foodbank logo Recent donations of 75 kg will have provided 3 days of meals for 9 persons (calculated by the weight of a standard food parcel). See certificate and letter on noticeboard.

Solas Festival - Methodist Tent

A warm invitation is given to join other Scotland Methodists (and everyone else!) at the Solas Festival - and particularly in the Methodist Tent - on Saturday 20th June at The Bield, Blackruthven, Perth.

The theme of the festival this year is Between the Lines, inviting people to explore, through the creative arts and joint activities, who we are, what separates and what brings us together.

The Methodist Tent will offer reflective activities on the theme of “breaking out”, beginning with a time of prayer at 11am, then an exploration of the site, before chance to join in whatever is going on, closing with a gathering together at the Tent at 4pm.

Funding is being made available - contact Louise McAspurren at City of Edinburgh Methodist Church office.

For more details or to volunteer for a spell of “Tent duty”, please contact Helen Wareing; phone 07799 900465.

Support other Organisations

Scottish Bible Society

Our support via the Bible-a-Month Club is invited in June for work in Nepal - remembering especially the effects of the recent devastating earthquake.

Our prayerful attention this week is drawn to

  • United Bible Societies round table meetings in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia;
  • development of Braille & audio Bibles, and other aids for those with visual impairments;
  • response to the Max7 resources for children's ministry in Singapore, also this year's Colours of the Bible art competition;
  • hindrance of distribution in Bangladesh by road blockages and political tension generally, especially in rural areas where people attend literacy classes;
  • distribution of Bibles to those with little or no monetary resources in remote Laos villages.
