Support other Organisations

Scottish Bible Society

Our support through the Bible-a-Month Club is invited in October for work in Georgia (ex-USSR).

Our prayerful attention is drawn this week to

  • launch of the Urdu Study Bible in Pakistan, also use of the Urdu Children's Bible;
  • meeting on Thursday of the SBS Council of Church Representatives;
  • observance of Bible Sunday in churches across Scotland next Sunday.

Scottish Churches Housing Action

  • The October mailing gives news of a development by SCHA with the establishment of a new company - Whitebeam Homes. The intention is that the company (still awaiting charitable recognition) will buy property in the open market and make it available to those who need it. The first property will be on the Isle of Arran where for many years plans to build at Sannox have not come to fruition whilst houses for sale on the island stand empty.
    The United Reformed Church has been able to make a substantial contribution to this new venture with proceeds from the sale of the Sannox site, which will become a Christian retreat centre. The launch of this new venture will be in January.
  • Next year's Poverty and Homeless Action Week from Saturday 26th January to Sunday 3rd February will have as its theme “Can you cast the first stone?”
    It will focus on the ways in which people who are in poverty or homeless attract blame for their situation. Materials for this are available now from www.actionweek.org.uk

“BibleLands” - now “Embrace the Middle East”

The new name of this well-established charity tackling poverty and injustice in the Middle East was launched at the Greenbelt Festival. It has also been announced that the Patrons have been joined by Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the UK, so deepening links with Egyptian Christians in Britain. (See weekly Prayer Points for indication of its work)
