Harvest Celebration

Worship today includes the 'litany of offerings by congregation' during which envelopes for donations in support of MRDF will be brought forward. Please note that any MRDF envelopes not given in today may be placed in the collection plate in the next few weeks.

Charles Wesley 300th Birthday Anniversary

Perth Flower Festival Weekend

21st - 23rd September

Our friends in Perth Methodist Church, Scott Street are marking the above anniversary by a Flower Festival in which everyone is welcome to join - as often as wished!

    • Saturday 22nd September: 10 am to 4 pm
    • Sunday 23rd September: 2 pm to 4 pm
    • Refreshments on sale throughout
    • Saturday 12 pm to 2 pm soup & filled rolls
    • Saturday 2 pm to 4 pm Cream Teas
    • In support of project in Namibia where Barry & Chris Parkin (long-standing Perth members) are starting 2 years of service with VSO (Barry will be teaching in Caprivi Secondary School).
  • “Why Celebrate?” - Friday - 7.30 pm
    Rev Prof Frank Whaling will speak of Charles Wesley as a person and hymn-writer; opportunity for questions and “cuppa” after.
  • East Fife Male Voice Choir - Saturday - 7.30 pm
    “an enjoyable and inspiring evening” - tickets (£5) to be purchased in advance from 'Concorde Music Shop' (Scott St) or phone 01738 827137.
  • Harvest Thanksgiving - Sunday - 11 am, led by the Rev David Firth and the Rev David Cooper (Superintendent, Edinburgh & Forth Circuit)
  • Charles Wesley Epilogue - Sunday - 4 pm - a half hour of praise and thanksgiving as the Flower Festival draws to a close.

Hymn Tune Writing Competition

Through personal connections with Settle Methodist Circuit, Heather has information about their Eighth Annual Hymn Writing Festival : 9th-11th November

This year's competition is to compose a hymn tune with the title “Charles Wesley” - there is an open class (as well as a closed Settle Circuit class!).

Rules can be summarised as

  1. tune entirely of own composition, unpublished
  2. scored for any keyboard - harmony indication helpful
  3. any recognised metre
  4. © remains with composer
  5. all entries submitted to judges whose decision is final, with no correspondence
  6. no written words - indication of possible hymn(s) is fine
  7. prize of £200 for winner, £150 second prize.
  8. winning tunes to be played at Settle Hymn Festival - winners notified by phone.

Closing date - 9th October. Entry forms with further details on Vestibule table.

In many countries, partner churches are providing infant and maternal care, supported by the Fund for World Mission.

UK Action Idea : toddler groups mitigate against isolation increased by breakdown of family and community life - churches provide valuable space, support and sanity!

There is a supply of cards on Vestibule table to take & distribute.

Scottish Bible Society

Our support through the Bible-a-Month Club is invited in September for work in Nepal. See library area noticeboard for more details.

Our prayerful attention is drawn this week to:

  • continuing distribution in Algeria in spite of new restrictive laws;
  • SBS Board meeting on Wednesday;
  • desire for freedom of worship and Scripture imports in Tunisia;
  • influence of distribution and other work in Cuba after the hurricane of 2005;
  • completion of dramatised New Testament in Haitian Creole, also translation of Study Bible.
