Pray Without Ceasing - “Scotland District Week”
From Friday 11th to Friday 18th August, the Scotland District is at the centre of
the Connexion's 'Pray Without Ceasing' initiative. Details are available of the allocation
among the District's Circuits - all appointed Preachers have been requested to include
lighting of the Candle and saying of the District Prayer in worship today.
Thursday has been selected for particular focus by our own Circuit - please support this in
any way YOU can:
- The “Prayer” theme for the window display now focuses on “Pray Without
Ceasing”
- Leaflet available, for distribution in support of prayer throughout our Church
community throughout the Day;
- “Prayer in the porch” from 2 pm to 5 pm, ending with a meal together.
ALL are welcome to join in this time of prayer, for as long or short a time as
suitable; prayers will be led on selected themes every 30 minutes and the downstairs
rooms will also be open for quiet reflection. Invitation is also given to share in
the meal of fish and chips (or you can bring your own food) at 5 pm;
- Remember (and support if possible) other events in the Circuit and District (see leaflet);
- Pass on any comments or reaction to the Week, Day or Year to 'tricia: the District PWC Group
has asked for “feedback” to reflect on, and to assist learning and moving forward
in deepening our individual and collective prayer life.
'What Sort of Bishops?'
10 copies of the full Report are in a box on the Vestibule table - borrow, read, & return
before 'Discussion with Coffee' on 9th September.
“Remembering the contribution of our Veteran Heroes”
A letter has been sent to our Ministers from Jim McGovern, MP (Dundee West)
in connection with the Government's promotion of a new Veterans' Badge launched by the
Ministry of Defence and “intended to be worn on civilian attire to help people
recognise veterans and their contribution to the defence of our communities and
our way of life in Britain.”
Mr McGovern is seeking to encourage applications by those eligible for this badge and
has sent a supply of forms for this purpose. See letter and forms on the Vestibule table.

Support other Organisations
Scottish Bible Society
Our support through the Bible-a-Month Club is invited in August for work here in Scotland.
See library area noticeboard for details.
Our prayerful attention is drawn this week to
- preparation of funding reform and strategic plans by the Bible Society in Botswana;
- provision of typesetting facilities for other Bible Societies by the desktop publishing
centre in Malawi;
- the people of Zimbabwe and their situations;
- churches' partnerships with the Scottish Bible Society in use of BibleWorld SBS Studios.
The SBS Summer Appeal is for work in Russia where previous support from Scotland has helped provide Bibles to individuals and also in prisons, orphanages, and schools for the blind. Recent news is of a contribution to 2 out of the 38 ethnic minority groups in the Russian Federation: completion of the New Testament in the Veps and Avar languages. Support for this project is invited - see letter on library area noticeboard or contact Jean, our SBS link person.
Trade Justice
Ralph commends to us the newly-opened Coffee Exchange at
20A Exchange Street, which seeks to sell only FairTrade and Rainforest Alliance coffee, teas, fruit,
etc, and to source its other supplies locally wherever possible. Profits go to local and
international charities.
